Jet Master

Champion South African Sire and Racehorse

Jet Master is an exciting stallion reflecting the growing stature of South African thoroughbred racing and breeding on the international stage.

Jet Master was foaled in 1994 and is now a bay stallion that stands 17 hands. He won 17 races and was placed 5 times from 24 career starts. He was unraced as a 2yo, but at three won the Group 1 Cape Guineas over 1600m, and was second in the Group 1 Classic over 1800m. As a 4yo, Jet Master won three Group 1 races from 1200-1600m, and as a 5yo was also successful in four more Group 1 races up to 1600m. Not surprisingly, Jet Master has a host of awards in South Africa including Champion Older Sprinter Male, Champion Older Middle Distance Male, and the 1999/2000 Horse Of The Year.

Jet Master at Stud

As impressive as his performances on the track were, his stud career seems set to outshine these. His first crop was foaled in 2002, and they immediately made an impact on South African racing being named Champion Freshman sire for his first crop. He has subsequently won Champion 2yo Sire, and with only three crops of racing age, was named South African Champion Sire for the recently completed season.

Jet Master’s Pedigree

Jet Master is by a son of Northern Dancer in Rakeen. Rakeen was a decent racehorse, winning twice in England as a 3yo before being sold to South Africa where he continued his career. In South Africa, Rakeen raced 9 times for 4 wins including the Group 2 Allen Snijman Stakes. He also had a third placing in the Group 1 Rothman’s July Cup, and was only unplaced once in 12 starts. At stud, Rakeen has been a good stallion, with his best progeny no doubt Jet Master. In all, he has sired 18 Stakes winners in South Africa, and surprisingly returned to the USA for a couple of seasons with limited success. The reason he went to the US is due to his exceptional female family. Rakeen is a half brother to three quality sires in their own right in Rahy, Rivotious and Singspiel. To underline the depth of the family, it is also the same family as Devil’s Bag, Saint Ballado, SligoBay and Manshood who stood at stud in Queensland.

In contrast to Rakeen, Jet Master is from an ordinary female line to say the least. His dam, Jet Lightning, to date has produced only one other winner. While the female family has a number of winners in it, it is certainly not overly endowed with Black Type. The second dam, Jolly Laughter is a half sister to the Group 1 placed filly, Pompeii, while the third dam, Let’s Laugh, was also placed in the same race called the Allan Robertson Fillies’ Championship. To find other quality runners we have to go back to the fourth dam who is the granddam, and great granddam of Stakes winners Harlequin, Disco Man and Remy.
